Creed - 4

Faith - is a word that sits uncomfortably in traditional definition. I think of it, if I must, as more akin to hear/obey than to psychological states of affirmation of doctrine or proposition. I might believe I could dance, but if I failed to practice, I would not be a reliable partner.

Hear and obey are both words that reach back into action - Shema is 'to hear' in Hebrew. The root for obey is the same SHM with differing vowel points. Obey in our tongue is from the French to hear. To 'have' faith in someone is to be willing then to commit to hearing with a relationship that includes believing that obedience to what one hears is worthwhile.

I am reminded of the image of the suction cup - one by itself needs wetting to stick to a window for a limited time. Two together stick to each other with more power. The Trinity is a threesome that is at one like that, love being the glue and the substance of the suction cups. We too are invited to the same tenacious relationship with the Most High, the love being demonstrated in the person of Jesus and the power of the Spirit that raised him from the dead.
