Jebus Town

Running; out of that garden – running away; naked. What happened to Josh? Supper – held – held close. Stop – no one pursuing me; alone; cold. Warm at supper; feet clean; now cold.

"Friend, here, cover yourself."

Dad asleep; Josh so alone. Must find out what’s going on.

"Thanks; nice cloak. I can get to my house now."

Josh knew the shape of Hell's Gate, the cave mouth over the lake. He didn't speak to them; just drew the shape of that cave mouth in the sand, and the people went away – thoughtful.

"Dad! What are you saying? You knew Josh! Don’t you remember the fishing? Why – he and you could walk on water and just call the fish to jump into the boat."

Now I know why he asked me here. I thought we were going to party. This is no party. This place is death!

– If you really want to live, leave everything and come with me, he said. We've got work in the city.

Dad coming?

Pete? Sure he is, said Josh, but you've got something to teach him too. You'll stick with me. He's my friend but you, Johnnie Mark, are my sweetheart.

I wondered, but I went with Josh, Dad and the crew to this place; fell asleep on Josh's lap; too much excitement.

"Dad? Tears? – what’s up?"

He wants the boats, and the breeze on his face. Josh is in trouble with the local bosses. They like partying, but only by their rules. He held me so close at the supper. Warmth; feel; smell; like earth. He’s the first man.

Back home; fishing. Caught nothing. Passed under the cave's mouth. That's Josh on shore!

– Cast in the nets.

A huge catch – 153 fish. Breakfast time.

– Do you love me, Pete?

Ask me, Josh!
